DC EDITING: Because language
matters

You've invested a great deal of time and energy in your manuscript- doesn't it make sense to invest in the quality of your work?

What Can DC Editing Do For You ?

I offer proofreading for all genres of literature- from Sci-Fi, Horror and Fiction to Autobiographies, Historical and Non-fiction works. I'll also proofread dissertations, essays, marketing literature, translations- and anything else you've got!

Since the term "proofreading" can seem a little vague and woolly (mostly because the art of writing is so vague and woolly) here's what you can- and can't- expect from me:

Proofreading entails going over the text with a fine-tooth comb, fixing punctuation, spelling and grammar errors.

But my proofreading service is much more than that: I'll also provide detailed notes of recommendations (such as tone, clarity and layout) for you to review from the reader's perspective (consider me something like a Beta reader). This will give you an indication of what you might want to change - or not.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still subscribe to the ethos that The Customer Is Always Right.

I'll also check to ensure consistency- in timelines, the spelling of names, and the million different details that make up the rich tapestry of your story. I'll also take a very close look at your characters to make sure both their speech and their actions remain consistent throughout.

And finally, I'll also format your manuscript, from optimal font style to line spacing, from paragraph indents to chapter layout, all the way up to final formatting, ready for self-publishing or for submission to a literary agent or publisher. If you're unsure of what's required, just let me know and I'll be happy to advise you.

What I don't do:

Unfortunately I simply don't have the time to focus on the more fundamental aspects of your work. Plot arcs, character development, research, fact-checking and cross-referencing is simply too time-consuming for me to make it financially viable. If that's the kind of work your manuscript needs, I suggest taking it to the appropriate specialist.

One last thing: there are many differences in UK English and US English, not just in spelling, but also in word usage (a car's "bonnet" versus "hood", for example).  Rest assured that even though I'm based in the UK I'm fully versed in both- as well as Canadian and Australian English- and so I'll proofread your manuscript to the relevant language requirements. This can be particularly useful if you're an American writing a romance based in Victorian England, or a Scotsman with a US-based thriller.

I understand that every project is different, so please get in touch to discuss your unique requirements.

Whichever service you choose, you can rest assured that the proofreading will be carried out by me personally. I do not use ChatGPT, Grammarly, or any other software.

Advanced technology is undeniably extremely good; however, it isn't yet good enough to replace the human eye in spotting errors, or the human mind in being able to correct those errors.
